The State Revenue Office

is a Branch of the Department of Treasury and Finance responsible for collecting State revenue in a fair, transparent and efficient manner on behalf of all Tasmanians.

Revenue collected is used to fund essential services provided by the Tasmanian Government including hospitals, schools, roads and law and order.

Our role is to:
  • collect and administer State taxes;
  • administer a number of grants, subsidies and rebates paid to Tasmanians;
  • conduct audits to ensure all taxpayers pay the correct amount of tax; and
  • provide advice and assistance to taxpayers in regard to all state taxation matters and, where required, take necessary action to recover money owed to the State.

The State Revenue Office has developed a Taxpayer Charter outlining its Service Standards and information to assist taxpayers in meeting their taxation obligations.

Information is available on the State Revenue Office approach to Debt Management.

Our Education and Communication Plan 2009-2012 is part of an ongoing strategy to raise awareness of State taxes, promote taxpayer self-compliance, and develop communication with representative groups and education providers.

We routinely use consultation on legislative, procedural or administrative changes to provide taxpayers, taxation and other professionals, and professional and respresentative organisations the opportunity to contribute to improving the effectiveness of State taxation administration.

The State Revenue Office Subscription system provides e-mail notification of news items and updated documents on the SRO website.

Compliance Activities

We presume taxpayers intend to meet their obligations however the State Revenue Office is required by law to ensure compliance with tax laws.

Our Compliance Strategy takes a twofold approach:
  • encouraging and supporting voluntary compliance, and
  • intervening in cases where State taxation obligations are not met either by error or deliberate action.
