First Home Owner Grant

The First Home Owner Grant commenced on 1 July 2000.

The broad principles of the grant are:

  • eligible applicants will be entitled to a one-off payment of up to $7 000 (however see note).
  • eligible applicants must be at least 18 years of age, be Australian citizens or permanent residents and who are buying or building their first home in Australia.
  • assistance is not means tested.
  • joint applicants will be restricted to a single application for a single property and only one grant will be made.

Note: effective from 14 October 2008, under the Federal Government’s First Home Owners Boost (FHOB) Scheme, first home buyers, who qualify for the First Home Owner Grant, will also receive an extra payment of $7 000 where they purchase an established home or an extra $14 000 where they purchase or build a new home.

The FHOB Scheme is available to applicants who;
  • qualify for the First Home Owner Grant;
  • meet the eligibility criteria for the FHOB: and
  • who have entered into a contract to buy or build a home on or after 14 October 2008 and on or before 30 June 2009.

First home buyers may also be eligible for the First Home Buyers Duty Concession if the buyer has entered into a contract to purchase a house, or build a house as part of a house and land package from 20 May 2004.
