Eligible pensioners (including Health Care Card holders) are entitled to a rates remission equal to the lesser of:
- the prescribed maximum amount; or
- 30 per cent of thier rates.
The prescribed amounts for 2026-2027 are:
- $401 for TasWater clients; or
- $591 for non TasWater clients.
Eligibility
You may qualify for a rates remission if you hold one of these cards:
- Services Australia Pensioner Concession Card (PCC);
- Services Australia Health Care Card (HCC);
- Department of Veterans' Affairs Pensioner Concession Card (PCC);
- Department of Veterans' Affairs 'Gold Card' (endorsed TPI or War Widow/Widower).
Your card must have been issued on or before 1 July 2026 to receive the remission for the 2026-27 financial year. The issue date is shown on your card.
The rates remission applies only to your principal place of residence, meaning the property where you usually live, eat and sleep.
Not eligibile: You are not eligible if you only hold a Commonwealth Seniors Health Care Card.
How to apply
Apply in person at your local Council by 31 March in the relevant financial year (for 2026-27 this is 31 March 2027).
When you apply you will be asked to:
- show your PCC, HCC or 'Gold Card'; and
- certify that the property you are applying for is your principal place of residence.
Retrospective claims
Retrospective claims are limited to one financial year.
To be eligible for a retrospective claim:
- you must have held a PCC, HCC or 'Gold Card' (endorsed TPI or War Widow/Widower) on or before 1 July of the relevant financial year; and
- the property must have been your principal place of residence.
The prescribed amounts for 2025-26 were:
- $385 for TasWater clients; or
- $566 for non TasWater clients.
Lodge a retrospective with your local council before 31 March of the following financial year. For example, a retrospective claim for 2025-26 must be lodged with your local council by 31 March 2027.
