Electricity Concessions

​​​​​​Overview


The following concessions for eligible customers are applied as a daily discount:

  • Annual electricity concession
  • Medical heating or cooling concession
  • Life support concession

Customers may qualify for all three concessions where the criteria of each concession is met.

Annual Electricity Concession

The annual electricity concession provides a daily discount to eligible customers at a cents-per-day rate. The current concession is 140.740 cents per day.

Medical Cooling or Heating Concession

The medical cooling or heating concession provides a daily discount to eligible customers who have, or live with a person who has, a medical condition that requires the cooling or heating of the customer's principal place of residence in order to manage that condition.

The current concession is 42.155 cents per day. Customers must be eligible to receive the annual electricity concession to qualify for the medical cooling or heating concession.

Life Support Concession

The life support concession provides a daily discount to eligible customers who use an approved life support system, or who live with someone who uses such a system. The current approved life support systems and their daily discounts are:

​​​Eligibility Criteria


​​Annual Electricity Concession

The person seeking the concession must hold one of the following cards:
  • Pensioner Concession Card (Centrelink or Veterans' Affairs); or
  • Health Care Card; or
  • ImmiCard (Bridging Visa E); or
  • Tasmanian Concession Card (issued by the Department of Premier and Cabinet).

The name on the concession card must match the name of the account holder of the electricity account. The concession recipient must be responsible for the payment of the electricity account.

The annual electricity concession is only available for the customer's principal place of residence. Concessions cannot be claimed for holiday homes or investment/rental properties.

The electricity account must be billed at a general domestic tariff rate or its equivalent. Electricity accounts that combine domestic and commercial or business tariffs are not eligible for the concession.

How to apply
To apply for an electricity concession, please complete the Annual Electricity Concession Application Form (also available from your electricity retailer and Service Tasmania) and forward to your electricity retailer. The State Revenue Office cannot accept and approve applications as this is the responsibility of electricity retailers.
Medical Cooling or Heating Concession

The person seeking the concession must hold either a Pensioner Concession Card or a Health Care Card. ImmiCard and Tasmanian Concession Card holders are not eligible for this concession.

Examples of medical conditions that qualify for the medical cooling or heating concession include, but are not limited to:
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Lymphoedema
  • Parkinson's disease
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Motor neurone disease
  • Post polio syndrome/poliomyelitis
  • Scleroderma
  • Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE)

How to apply
Eligible medical cooling or heating customers must complete the Medical Cooling or Heating Concession Application Form (also available from your electricity retailer and Service Tasmania). The form must be signed by a medical practitioner as verification that a member of that household requires cooling or heating of the residence. Forward the form to your electricity retailer. The State Revenue Office cannot accept and approve applications as this is the responsibility of electricity retailers.
Life Support Concession

The electricity account holder must require, or live with a person who requires, an approved life support system in their principal place of residence.

They do not need to quality for the annual electricity concession to qualify for the life support concession.

The approved life support systems that qualify for the life support concession are:
  • Oxygen Concentrator
  • Peritoneal dialysis machine
  • Haemo-dialysis machine
  • Chronic positive pressure and airways regulator
  • Respirator (iron lung)
  • Combination oxygen concentrator and chronic positive pressure and airways regulator
  • Phototherapy machine
  • Left ventricular assist device

How to apply
Eligible customers must complete the Life Support Concession Application Form (also available from your electricity retailers and Service Tasmania). The form must be signed by a medical practitioner as verification that a member of that household requires a home-based life support system. Forward the form to your electricity retailer. The State Revenue Office cannot accept and approve applications as this is the responsibility of electricity retailers.​


 

Retrospective Claims

​Retrospective claims were introduced to assist where there is a delay in the issue of a Pensioner Concession Card, Health Care Card, Immicard or Tasmanian Concession Card. 

Retrospective claims are limited to twelve months. 

For a retrospective claim to apply on a particular date the applicant must have, on or before that date:

  • submitted to an authorised electricity retailer a completed application form for the medical cooling or heating concession, or annual electricity concession; and
  • been eligible to hold a Pensioner Concession Card, Health Care Card, Immicard or Tasmanian Concession Card. ​
